Barricane Beach
mapstreetview
Web: http://www.mortehoeholiday.co.uk/local/walks-and-beaches
A beach composed of fragments of shell rather than sand. See 'Barricane Beach Cafe' for info on seasonally-open cafe. This beach was much frequented by Victorian marine biologist Philip Gosse. At about 7m tide height the sand beach starts to disappear, but there is a shigle beach higher up. Monkey Island (rock with grass on it) does indeed become an island at high tide. Wikipedia: 'Philip Henry Gosse (April 6, 1810 – August 23, 1888) was an English naturalist and popularizer of natural science, virtually the inventor of the seawater aquarium, and a painstaking innovator in the study of marine biology.' His son Edmund Gosse recalled a study party ... “a long desultory line of persons on a beach of shells, doubtless at Barricane. At the head of the procession, like Apollo conducting the Muses, my father strides ahead in an immense wide-awake hat, loose black coat and trousers, and fisherman’s boots, with a collecting-basket in one hand, a staff or prod in the other. Then follow gentlemen of every age, all seeming spectacled and old to me, and many ladies in the balloon costume of 1855, with shawls falling in a point from between their shoulders to the edge of their flounced petticoats, each wearing a mushroom hat with streamers; I myself am tenderly conducted along the beach by one or more of these enthusiastic nymphs, and “jumped” over the perilous little watercourses that meander to the sea.” Life.

Grunta Beach
mapstreetview
Web: http://www.mortehoeholiday.co.uk/local/walks-and-beaches
This beach is great for rockpooling, swimming, bodyboarding, picnicking, dogwalking and even (at very low tide) surfing. At low tide you may be able to paddle a surfboard around to Combesgate Beach or Woolacombe beach. See web link for Grunta walking map. Grunta is supposedly named after the grunting sound of a shipload of pigs beached after a wreck. From Mortehoe go downhill towards the sea. After the former chapel turn left through a gate into National Trust fields, keeping the Grunta cliffs to the South of you. When you get to the rocks the path is fairly difficult. The ascent back to Mortehoe is moderately arduous due to height to be gained ... but these difficulties are a small price to pay for enjoying what is a very underused beach. Be aware of the tides.
